RSV season lasts until spring. Virginia takes case-by-case vaccine approach
ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – The respiratory syncytial virus outbreak is extending into the spring in an unusual pattern, but Virginia has no plans to extend its vaccination period like other states.
RSV is usually prevalent from fall to spring, and vaccination is recommended by the end of March. The seasons have changed this season. The positivity rate is significantly higher than this time last year, according to federal data.
Some states have extended the RSV vaccination period, but Virginia has not. Virginia will consider orders from providers on a case-by-case basis.
Experts say RSV remains the leading cause of hospitalization in infants. It is unclear why the virus persists. Doctors say continued access to vaccinations could make a big difference.
Fewer pregnant women taking acetaminophen
A new study shows fewer pregnant women in the emergency room are taking acetaminophen, the common name for Tylenol.
The study, published in the journal The Lancet, follows President Donald Trump’s claims that there is a link to autism. Most experts do not recognize such a connection.
Major medical associations say acetaminophen is the safest over-the-counter pain reliever and fever reducer during pregnancy.
New variants of coronavirus affect children differently
The new cicada variant of the coronavirus appears to be more likely to infect children than adults, according to data. Researchers say they are targeting children between the ages of 3 and 15, but the exact reason is unclear. They believe this may be because immune protection from vaccines or past infections wears off more quickly than in adults, as well as other genetic reasons.
