Very low-carb diet found to benefit population of obese elderly

A team of scientists has determined whether a very low-carb diet helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in obese older people.

To find out if a very low-carb diet helps reduce risk, a team of scientists at the University of Alabama (UAB) at the Center for Nutrition and Obesity Research in Birmingham is led by Amy M. In this study, subjects were divided into two groups. One was prescribed an ultra low carb diet and the other was on a standard low fat diet for 8 weeks. Throughout the study, participants’ body composition, fat distribution, insulin sensitivity, and lipid profile were regularly checked and compared.
Goss and her colleagues found that the group consuming a low-carb diet lost more visceral adipose tissue or fat than the other groups. Intermuscular adipose tissue in the low-carb diet group was also significantly reduced. There was also a greater increase in insulin sensitivity and a decrease in fasting blood glucose and triglycerides.
“We also found a significant improvement in the overall lipid profile that reflects a lower risk of cardiovascular disease,” said Goss, assistant professor of nutritional science at UAB. Said in a statement.. “Overall, we observed improved body composition, fat distribution, and metabolic health in response to an eight-week very low-carb diet.”
The findings prompted the team to conclude that a very low-carb diet could benefit older obese people. Goss also said the diet could be a good treatment option for older people with type 2 diabetes and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
