Experts predict New York tick season will be ‘early and abundant’
Experts at SUNY’s Vector-Borne Disease Center Severe tick season expected. Despite the cold winter and spring months, there is already a lot of early-season tick activity.

Climate change is increasing the likelihood of contracting tick-borne diseases. Mites thrive in warmer, moister environments. That has led to longer tick seasons, allowing tick populations to expand into new areas and introduce new diseases. According to Boston University.
From 2024 to 2025, the number of ticks submitted for testing at SUNY labs increased by 145%.
A lot of it has to do with education. Streif said diagnoses of tick-borne diseases are increasing in part because people are becoming more aware of symptoms and testing.
As these diseases become more common in the region, more doctors are beginning to recognize the different symptoms of these diseases, Streif said.
“Not everyone is treated exactly the same, so if anyone has any persistent fatigue or fever, we strongly encourage them to talk to their health care provider and get tested for possible other infections, not just Lyme disease,” she said.
The best way to prevent tick bites is to take precautions, Streif said. Before heading into the woods, tuck your pants into socks and wear an EPA-registered insect repellent such as DEET or picardin, or clothing pre-treated with permethrin.
“When someone returns from an outing, ideally they should change clothes, wash old clothes, take a shower if possible, and do a skin check,” Streif said.
If you find a tick bite, it’s important to remove it right away, Streif says. Use tweezers to get it as close to the skin as possible. Kill the mites using rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide.
Then, be careful of the bite for 30 days and see your doctor if you develop a rash or flu-like symptoms.
