St. Clair County Health Officials Identify First Local Case of Salmonella Associated with Multi-State Outbreak
St. Clair County, Michigan – The St. Clair County Health Department (SCCHD) has identified its first local case of salmonella linked to a multi-state outbreak.
This outbreak is associated with contact with backyard poultry, including chicks and ducklings.
SCCHD recommends precautions when handling poultry and cleaning areas where birds live or roam.
Salmonella is commonly found in poultry feces and can be easily transmitted to humans.
Bacteria can also be present on the bird’s feathers, feet, beak, cage, coop, and surrounding environment.
Even if poultry looks healthy, it can carry salmonella.
People can become infected by handling poultry or touching contaminated surfaces.
Germs can spread to hands, shoes, and clothing, especially after working or playing in areas where birds are kept.
Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and abdominal pain that lasts 4 to 7 days or more.
Young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the following steps to prevent salmonella infection from backyard poultry.
• Children under 5, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems should avoid handling chicks, ducklings, and other poultry.
• Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after touching birds or anything in their environment. Adults should supervise young children’s handwashing.
• If soap and water are not readily available, use hand sanitizer until you can wash your hands properly.
• Clean cages, feeders, water containers, and other poultry equipment outdoors whenever possible.
• Keep poultry away from areas where food and drinks are prepared, served, or stored, such as kitchens and patios.
• When handling poultry or surrounding items, do not eat, drink or touch your mouth.
• Do not store live poultry in poultry or other living spaces.
• Do not give live baby poultry as a gift to young children.
