Can selfies help detect heart disease?

Imagine that the next time you need to visit a cardiologist, he will ask you to send a selfie photo in place of your past health record. As for medical diagnosis, this may sound strange. But a new study could help doctors detect heart disease in people with the help of their selfies.

Author of the study published in European Heart Journal On August 21, he showed that using deep learning algorithms, four pictures of a person’s face could be detected to detect coronary artery disease (CAD).

Researchers believe that this algorithm could be deployed as a screening tool to identify potential heart disease in people both in the general population and in high-risk groups, followed by further clinical investigations. You can inquire. “To our knowledge, this is the first study to show that artificial intelligence can be used to analyze the face to detect heart disease. This can be done in an outpatient clinic or for patients to do their own screening. Taking a “selfie” is a step towards developing a deep learning-based tool that can be used to assess the risk of heart disease. “Professor Zhe Zheng said. , Deputy Director of China National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases, Deputy Director of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Beijing, China and the Fuwa Hospital of Beijing Union Medical University.

Leading the study, Zheng explains that the ultimate goal is to develop a self-reporting application to assess the risk of heart disease before high-risk communities go to the clinic. “This could be a cheap, simple, and effective way to identify patients in need of further investigation,” Zheng added the official release of the European Heart Association website.

There are several known facial features that are associated with an increased risk of heart disease: thin or white hair, wrinkles in the ear lobes, wrinkles, and xanthomas (small deposits of cholesterol, usually under the skin around the eyelids). And the corneal arch (fat, cholesterol deposits displayed as opaque white, gray, or blue rings on the outer edge of the cornea). But these features are difficult for humans to use to predict and quantify heart disease risk, Release added.

In the study, Zheng and his colleagues enrolled 5,796 patients from eight Chinese hospitals and studied them between July 2017 and March 2019. These have been divided into two sections. %). All of these patients also underwent imaging such as coronary angiography and coronary computed tomography angiography to examine the blood vessels. Separately, the research nurse used a digital camera to take four pictures of the patient. Interviews were conducted with the patient’s medical history, lifestyle and socioeconomic status to collect additional data.

The radiologist also analyzed the angiogram to assess the degree of heart disease in these patients, depending on the number and location of vessels that were stenotic by 50% or more, Release added. We then used all this data collection to train and validate computer algorithms.

Once the algorithm was ready, it was tested on an additional 1,013 patients from nine Chinese hospitals enrolled between April and July 2019. The researchers used two existing methods to predict the risk of heart disease, the Diamond-Forrester model and a clinical consortium of CAD consortia. “For patients in the validation group, the algorithm correctly detected heart disease in 80% of cases (true positive rate or “sensitivity”) and correctly detected that heart disease was not present in 61% of cases. Release (true negative rate or’specificity’) explains, in the test group,’sensitivity’ was 80% and’specificity’ was 54%.

Despite this positive success, the researchers added that the algorithm needs to undergo further levels of improvement. There are also some other restrictions and ethical issues that need to be addressed before introducing this tool to the general public. Not only does this algorithm need to be tested on a larger group of people with different ethnic backgrounds, but it also raises some questions about the potential misuse of personal information, especially facial data and records. These concerns were raised by a fellow cardiovascular researcher at Oxford University in an editorial accompanying this study.

Zheng acknowledged in the release that ethical issues in the development and application of these new technologies are “important”. “Future research on clinical tools should only be for medical purposes, where privacy, insurance, and other social implications should be taken into account to ensure the tools are used,” he adds.
