Researchers identify mechanisms that lead to COVID-19-induced immune system dysfunction

In a key study, Australian researchers identified a mechanism that causes the immune system to decline in response to severe viral infections such as HIV and Covid-19.
It is widely known that severe viral infections and cancer cause disorders of the immune system, including T cells, a process called “wasting” of the immune system.

“In mice, we examined both mild and overwhelming lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus infections, which serve as models for severe viral infections in humans early after the onset of disease, at the molecular and functional levels. We’ve identified a significant difference between the two,” said Utzschneider.
