Oral sex is believed to create an environment for a common vaginal condition called bacterial vaginosis or BV the study PLoS Biology Journal.
BV is not a sexually transmitted disease. It is a normal bacterial imbalance found in the vagina.
Women who have it may be asymptomatic, but some get a strong odor discharge.
Researchers investigated how oral bacteria affect the microorganisms that grow in the vagina.
About BV
BV is usually not serious, but it can make women more vulnerable to sexually transmitted infections and urinary tract infections, and they should be treated.
If a woman is pregnant, there is an increased risk of preterm birth.
How do you know if you have it?
It is very common, and women with it may find that they have unusual secretions that have a strong fish-like odor.
There may be changes in the color and consistency of the discharge, such as a grayish white and a lighter watery appearance.
Your GP or sexual health clinic can arrange a swab test to see if you have a BV.
Positive results can be treated with antibiotic tablets, gels, or creams.
What did the new study find?
Women without BV carry many “good” bacteria, called lactic acid bacteria, that keep the vagina acidic at lower pH.
At times, this healthy balance can breed and destroy other vaginal microbes.
The reason why this happens is not completely known, but you are more likely to get a BV if:
- You are sexually active (but women who have never had sex can also get BV)
- You have changed partners
- I have a contraceptive device
- You use scented products in or around your vagina
A PLoS Biology study showed how common types of bacteria in the mouth associated with dental diseases and plaque support BV.
They conducted experiments on human vaginal specimens and mice to investigate the behavior of bacteria.
Oral bacteria, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Seemed to help the growth of other bacteria involved in BV.
Dr. Amanda Lewis, a researcher at the University of California, and his colleagues say the findings show how oral sex contributes to some cases of BV.
Experts already know that BV can be caused by sex, including among women.
Professor Claudia Estcourt, a spokesperson for the UK’s Sexual Health and HIV Society, said such studies are important for a better understanding of BV.
“We know that BV is a very complex entity with many factors.
She said oral sex may carry sexually transmitted diseases and other bacteria that may or may not be important in other health conditions.
