Surprisingly, the researchers noticed that the flies were oriented in the same direction that humans would feel in the pattern.

Scientists have also studied specific neuronal types that govern the detection of insect movements. They found that fly neurons could be turned on and off, altering the perception of insects’ fantastic movements.
What turned out to be interesting is that the researchers completely eliminated the illusion by turning off two types of motion detection neurons.
Furthermore, by turning off only one of the two types of neurons, the flies perceived fantastic movement in the opposite direction.
Second, neuroscientists sought to test whether their theory would apply to humans. Their experiments have suggested that the human visual system is more complex than that of flies. However, they found that a similar mechanism underlies this illusion of human movement.
The research results were published in the National Academy of Sciences journal Proceedings.
