Testing Prevents Coronavirus Outbreaks in Maine Summer Camps
For many children, summer camps looked a little different this year. There were daily temperature checks, more time outside and lots of face masks. Dr. Laura Brycedell and colleagues at the Main Medical Center Research Institute said additional efforts were rewarded.
They elaborated on where these camps went in a report examining 642 children and 380 staff who attended four camps in Maine for more than a month from June to August. ..
Camp participants traveled from six international locations in the United States and Bermuda, Canada, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, and the United Kingdom. They quarantined for up to 14 days before arriving at the camp and asked the camper to submit the Covid-19 test results before the three sites joined.
The camp participants were divided into groups when they first arrived and were required to wear face covers when interacting with people outside the group. The camp kept the surface clean and became a physically separate group. They staggered bathroom use and meal times. They also screened campers daily for fever and coronavirus symptoms.
Most participants took the Covid-19 test again a few days after they arrived at the camp. According to the report, it was when the asymptomatic camper and two staff members tested positive. They were quickly quarantined until they recovered and their contacts quarantined for 14 days.
No contacts have been tested positive for Covid-19, as reported by the CDC.
The report notes that it was not the specific precautions that helped prevent the spread of coronaviruses in these camps but the carefully implemented multi-tiered strategy.

There was a June outbreak in a stay-in camp in Georgia, with 44% of the participants being Covid-19 positive. The camp followed some safety guidelines, but the campers didn’t have to wear a mask and the room was not well ventilated.
The CDC reported that about 26% of people who tested positive in a Georgia camp reported no symptoms, suggesting that asymptomatic infection was likely responsible for the outbreak.
When schools across the country return to the session, the very different outcomes of these summer camps serve as a roadmap to prevent the spread of coronaviruses in large groups.
