Anxious adolescents with depression are more likely to have a heart attack by middle age: a study
Adolescent depression or anxiety is associated with middle-aged heart disease, according to a study titled “Nonpsychotic Mental Disorders and Risk of Myocardial Infarction in Adolescent Men: A National Cohort Study” published at ESC Congress 2020. It may contribute to the disease.

The study was conducted on 238,013 men born between 1952 and 1956 and underwent a thorough examination as part of the evaluation of forced military service in late adolescence, until the middle age (until age 58). A follow-up survey was conducted.
Assessments at the age of 18 or 19 included medical, psychiatric, and physical examinations by doctors and psychologists.
A total of 34,503 men were diagnosed with nonpsychotic mental disorders (such as depression and anxiety) during recruitment.
The study found that adolescent mental disorders were associated with a risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack) by middle age.

Studies also indicate that the risk of myocardial infarction is among men who have been diagnosed-even after considering other characteristics of adolescence, such as blood pressure, body mass index, general health, and socioeconomic status of the parents- I pointed out that it is 20% higher.
The link between mental illness and heart attacks is not complete, but was partly explained by poor stress tolerance and poor physical fitness of mentally ill teenagers.
“We already knew that adolescent physically fit men would be less likely to stay fit later in life if they had less stress resilience,” Dr. Berg said.
“Our previous study also showed that low-stress resilience is associated with a greater tendency toward addictive behavior, as demonstrated by an increased risk of smoking, alcohol consumption, and other drug use. Bergh concluded.
