Grin argues it’s not the day to consider reopening the pub
The pub remains closed for at least two weeks, allowing health officials to track the impact of school reopening on the spread of Covid-19.
This decision is described as the “death penalty” of a small pub.
But with the new outbreak of the virus spread nationwide, the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) also said that blockade restrictions in Kildare should remain.
They again urged people to avoid unnecessary gatherings and “distribute” the number of people they were in contact with.
Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ronan Gulin called for detention on what was sometimes an ardent appeal during the Covid-19 briefing Thursday night.
“We can’t just get everything in a pandemic,” he said.
“You can open your education system. You can protect the most vulnerable. You can bring your health system back up and running and handle all your backlogs. But everything else?”
Brian Foley, Communications and Public Relations Manager, The Vintners Ireland Federation, said: If the landlord has a definite date to reopen, that may not be so bad in most cases.
“But the most damaging thing is the ongoing uncertainty. And right now, there’s not much trust in the industry to change the current landscape.”
Dr. Grin also responded to Health Minister Stephen Donnelly’s warning that the country was at a “turning point” and a second “blockade” was approaching.
“I hope it’s not a turning point. I hope we see improvements over the next few days and weeks.”
But he argued: “Today is not the day to consider reopening the pub.
“It’s a completely false message to the millions of people who demand us to control this.”
He also highlighted the increase in infection rates in Carlow, Limerick and Tipperary.
He said the number of clusters is increasing nationwide while the larger clusters are under control.
This includes outbreaks in sports clubs, retail stores, small businesses, homes, and communities.
Over night, another 93 new cases were identified, for a total of 28,453 cases.
He noted that Dublin had 564 cases and Kildare 329 cases in the last 14 days.
Carlow said the incident rate was 69 per 100,000, and Limerick had 82 incidents over the past 14 days, with an incident rate of 42 per 100,000.
He also emphasized that the incidence of 133 cases of tipperaries over the last 14 days was 83 per 100,000.
He commented when asked if the rate of increase in counties other than Kildare would lead to more local blockades.
“I don’t want to go into the story of who should worry about restrictions and not about restrictions,” he said.
The case isn’t “escalating rapidly,” but it’s still “escalating,” he said.
“If you follow that path for a long time, you’ll see more hospitalizations and more people receiving emergency care,” he said.
But he added: “We are not contemplating the blockade of the nation.
“Ultimately, the power to prevent it is in each of us as individuals over the next few weeks.”
Professor Philip Nolan, chairman of the NPHET Epidemiology Modeling Advisory Group, warns:
“In a couple of weeks, we can’t have a nationwide party where changes in circumstances suddenly expand social connections for everyone.”
