HSE Team Quickly Tracks Covid-19 Suspect Case Testing In School
A public health team will be made available nationwide to quickly track testing of alleged Covid-19 cases occurring in schools.
Depending on the time of day, the swab results will return within 24-48 hours.
The Fast Track Test is one of the measures developed to tackle the coronavirus threat, with 1 million students and approximately 100,000 staff returning to the classroom for the first time since March.
Guidance is issued on what the school should follow and what to do if a student or employee is in a suspected or confirmed case.
The Covid-19 School Path, the Public Health Approach, was developed by the Department of Health, HSE and the Department of Education.
According to the guidance, it is inevitable that in the case of Covid-19 in the community, there will be some suspected or confirmed cases at school.
If public health measures such as social distance and hand washing are taken, transmission of the infection within the school is considered a low risk and there is a high probability that students and staff will bring it from home.
If Covid-19 is confirmed at school, each case will be assessed individually to determine the level of follow-up action required. According to the guidance, all school settings are unique and therefore risk-specific.
If a public health specialist decides who else needs to be tested, and if a large outbreak occurs-two or more cases-the entire school is closed or a small group such as a class or “pod” Decide whether to exclude.
If the student leaves school because of anxiety, the parent should discuss the issue with the GP, who will determine if an examination is required.
Symptoms of concern, and/or consistent with Covid-19 infection, include fever or new cough, shortness of breath, deterioration of existing respiratory status, or aging (loss of taste) or dysgeusia (altered taste). Includes symptoms.
If the test is positive, the HSE, not the school, will do contact tracking and risk assessment for close contacts. Under public health guidelines, close contacts should be quarantined for 14 days.
According to the guidance, the definition of close contacts within the school varies. The entire class is not automatically assumed to be considered a close contact.
Because there are so many different schools. For example, in elementary school children, “pods” (small groups in the classroom) are considered close contacts and are all deleted.
In second-level schools, close contact is determined by proximity and interaction with confirmed cases, because there is social distance rather than “pods”.
Factors to consider when determining close contacts for a second-level school include class placement, classroom structure, general travel, social networks, and friendship groups.
If the GP determines that the child needs to be tested, the child is a suspected case. At this point, siblings and other household members will also be removed from school until test results are available.
The guidance also points out that children continue to exhibit symptoms of many other cardiorespiratory viruses and mentions a persistent prevalence of colds among children.
Children with stuffy nose and runny noses but no fever are encouraged to go to school. However, if you need paracetamol or ibuprofen, you will need to stay home for 48 hours and your parents will need to call your GP to determine if an inspection is needed.
