“Alert” spike in virus admissions in the St. Louis area
Hospitals in the St. Louis area have seen spikes of sudden “warning” hospitalization for coronaviruses, and leaders of the pandemic task force in the area have called on residents to wear face covers and keep social distances. ..
Over the course of several weeks, COVID-19’s new daily attendance has been around 40. However, Wednesday’s St. Louis Metropolitan Pandemic Task Force Dr. Alex Garza reported 71 new hospitalizations. Garza said the best way to control the virus is to wear a mask, avoid crowds, and stay 6 feet from others. He warned that if hospitalization remained very high, health care as a whole would suffer.
“In the end, we will not be able to catch up with the healthcare system and provide care for other types of patients or elective surgery. We have worked hard to reduce these numbers, so be patient. I can’t do it now.”
Sam Page and Garza of the St. Louis County administration noted a surge in the number of virus-positive youth, including those between the ages of 15 and 19. Young people who test positive show little or no symptoms, but they can pass on the disease to others, Garza said.
Added to virus concern: The flu season is approaching. According to Garza, influenza cases usually begin in October or November. “That said, getting a flu shot is more important than it was last year,” he said.
The number of confirmed cases continues to grow in Boone County, where the University of Missouri-Columbia is located. According to the Columbia Missourian newspaper, the county has more than 2,000 people, including 500 new cases in the past two weeks.
