If no measures are taken to slow the spread of the virus, warning-level counties may face new restrictions. There are currently 30 counties in Illinois at alert level.
The number of COVID-19 is increasing in suburban Cook County. The state has added Cook County to the 29 other counties in the state at the warning level. That is, the county exceeds two or more risk indicators for the spread of the virus.
County health officials believe the surge in incidents stems from a large, private gathering where people failed to wear masks and observe social distances.
“We’re still considering whether we’re going to stay orange,” Rachel Rubin said. “We might recommend further mitigation across Cook County’s suburbs.”
Announcements have come at a difficult time for the county and many schools are back in session. Many school districts have begun remotes over the years, which can slow down the hope of returning to normal soon.
Officials may also consider further restrictions on gyms with fitness classes and will work with the Illinois Restaurant Association to develop new policies. That’s bad news for restaurant owners and customers who want to return to normal.
“Every time they limit our ability to do our business, it obviously has a huge impact on our ability to pay bills,” said Mark Hoffman, along with the à la carte restaurant group.
Health officials said there is one bright spot: hospitalization has not increased despite an increasing number of cases.

Illinois reports 2,149 new COVID-19 cases and 20 deaths
Illinois health officials reported 2,149 new cases of coronavirus and 20 additional deaths on Friday.
The Illinois Department of Public Health currently reports a total of 229,483 cases and 7,997 deaths in 102 counties in the state.
From August 21st to August 27th, the statewide positive rate is 4.1%. Within the last 24 hours, the laboratory has reported 48,383 specimens for a total of 3,924,305.
As of Thursday night, 1,546 people in Illinois were reported hospitalized at COVID-19. Among them, 352 patients were in the ICU and 132 patients with COVID-19 were on a ventilator.

-Cook County: 1 man in his 60s, 1 woman in his 70s, 1 man in his 70s, 1 woman in his 80s, 2 men in his 80s

-Douglas County: 1 Male in his 90s

-Iroquois County: 1 Female in her 80s
-Jefferson County: 1 Female in her 90s
