All participants were followed for 7 years. The researchers used data from the National Health Registry to record heart attacks and deaths during follow-up. They also mentioned the use of drugs to prevent cardiovascular disease during the diagnosis of diabetes.

The researchers found that patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes who had not previously had cardiovascular disease had a significantly reduced risk of heart attack and death. Between 1996 and 2011, the relative risk decreased by 61% for heart attacks and 41% for deaths. Over the same period, the absolute risks of heart attack and death were reduced by 4% and 12%, respectively.

When comparing diabetic patients to the general population, initially the large differences in risk narrowed over time. By the end of the study, the risk of heart attack in diabetics was only 0.6% higher than in the general population.

In diabetic patients, cholesterol-lowering drug use increased more than 10-fold, aspirin increased 50%, and blood-pressure lowering drugs increased up to 4-fold during the study period.
