Exposure to air pollution contributes to elevated blood pressure: Tribune India

New Delhi, August 30

Air pollution is a terrifying problem in much of northern India, and last winter the pollution led to a Delhi NCR emergency. Ambient air pollution, especially PM 2.5, has been reported to be associated with risk of cardiovascular disease.

However, evidence linking PM 2.5 to blood pressure comes mainly from cross-sectional studies and low concentrations of PM 2.5 in exposures that do not take into account other factors such as myriad time-varying or built environments. Is. However, the first study in Delhi provides epidemiological evidence for the short-term and long-term effects of ambient PM2.5 exposure on hypertension (BP) and hypertension.

This study was published in Circulation, the flagship journal of the American Heart Association. According to this study, the data strongly support a temporary association between high levels of ambient air pollution, higher systolic blood pressure, and incidental hypertension.

Dr. Drairaj Prabhakaran, vice president of research and policy at the Indian Institute of Health, who is one of the authors and the lead investigator of the project, said: “In India, ambient particulate matter (PM2.5) as a marker of air pollution from hypertension. This is an epidemiological study of the short-term and long-term effects of ambient PM2.5 exposure on elevated blood pressure and hypertension. This is the first study in the Indian context showing evidence.”

The study was conducted by Indian scientists at the Center for Chronic Diseases and PHFI in collaboration with Harvard TH Chan Public Health School on a representative population recruited locally. This provides strong evidence of the deleterious effects of PM2.5 exposure on cardiovascular disease (CVD) in India.

“The findings show that both short-term and long-term exposure to air pollution contributed to elevated blood pressure and increased risk of hypertension, especially in certain sections of the population (obese individuals).” Prabhakaran added. Air pollution by reducing major risk factors for cardiovascular death, a major contributor to death in the country.

“Until you go out, people who are at high risk of arrhythmias, or who have worse heart failure or stroke, such as severe heart failure, can be exposed to higher levels of outdoor PM2.5 until they reach a safe level of air quality. There is a need for extra protection by avoiding. Use a protective N95 mask recently or when feasible,” said one researcher.

The project participants were studied for 7 years. “The 7-year long-term range in which participants have been followed has observed a consistent long-term pattern and has given significant weight to the findings, compared with a cross-sectional study of intermittent episodes of high pollution and blood pressure. It also guarantees giving, which distorts the findings,” the study said.

The authors investigated the association between PM2.5, a marker of blood pressure air pollution in Delhi, and incident hypertension. It was conducted in a cohort of 5,300 people and included an annual questionnaire survey and biennial biosample collection.

Blood pressure was assessed long-term over 7 years at three time points within the cohort. “Various mechanisms by which acute and chronic exposure to air pollutants increase BP, including autonomic imbalances, sympathetic activation, production and release of inflammatory mediators, and direct effects on vascular endothelium. There is a route.” The study said. — IANS
