COVID-19-backed disposable plastic fights report found
A recent study by the University of Toronto-Dalhousie shows that support for a ban on disposable plastics has diminished in light of the COVID-19 epidemic, favoring the protection of plastic health and safety over reusable alternatives. The number of Canadians is increasing.
Last year, the university’s Agri-Food Analytical Science Lab discovered that 90% of Canadians supported stricter restrictions on plastics and 70% supported a ban on disposable plastics.
But since the beginning of the pandemic, support for stronger regulations has dropped to 79% and ban support has dropped to 58%.
Fifty-two percent of Canadians agreed that the new regulations surrounding disposable plastics should be postponed until the end of the pandemic.
“We see that COVID has had a little impact on how we see our health and the environment,” Sylvain Charlebois, senior director of the Agri-food Analytics Lab, told CTV News Channel.
“Unfortunately, we use more plastic. But I don’t think the Canadians have forgotten how miserable the situation is. I think there is a perception that there is a problem. “I think the majority wants to press the pause button until the end of the epidemic.”
Charlebois says Canadians are aware of the environmental impact of plastics, but 29% of survey participants reported they were consuming more plastic-packaged products during a pandemic ..
The report also found itKnowing that the cost of environmental packaging can be high, 50% of respondents have become more price conscious thanks to COVID-19. In particular, those who receive the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB).
But as Canadians adapt to the new normal reality, Charlevoix feels optimistic that more retailers and consumers are beginning to re-adopt reusable alternatives such as fabric shopping bags. I am saying.
“In the past month or so, more retailers and consumers have found it easier to use reusable bags, and they know how to clean them, so they know how to take care of them. He said, “he said.
There is no doubt that Canada’s move to limit disposable plastics has been affected by a pandemic.
British Columbia officials said in mid-January they are considering a statewide ban on disposable plastic grocery bags to end their city-wide efforts to address plastic pollution.
Just ten weeks later, the state’s chief health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, said the store had to provide clean plastic takeaway bags as the number of cases of COVID-19 surged.
Also, increased online shopping and the proliferation of plastic containers have forced some cities to reduce or even cancel municipal recycling programs altogether.
However, Charlevoix does not feel that the pandemic was a “major setback” in the fight against disposable plastics. He advises that further research needs to be done to show if disposable plastics really help reduce the transmission of the virus.
“There are signs that the virus itself doesn’t flow through the supply chain. But more research is needed,” he said.
“With more research and knowledge, we can reassure the public.”
