Researchers say cases of colon and rectal cancer are increasing among people under the age of 50 |

(CNN) Colon and rectal cancer cases are increasing in young adults and the median age of diagnosed patients is lower.

Colorectal cancer is the third most deadly cancer in men and women in the United States-after men’s lungs and prostate, and women’s lungs and breasts.

Actor Chadwick Bozeman died of colon cancer at 43 years old on Friday after struggling with the disease for many years. According to a March report from the American Cancer Society, cases of colorectal cancer under the age of 50 have increased since the 1990s.

Half of all new diagnoses are in people under 66, the report said.

The median age will decrease

The American Cancer Society recommends regular screening for colorectal and rectal cancer from age 45. Other health agencies still recommend routine screening beginning at age 50.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the latest data available in 2017 killed 52,547 people with colorectal cancer nationwide.

More young people have been diagnosed for many years. The median age of people diagnosed with colorectal cancer was 72 years in 1989, according to a report from the American Cancer Society. It remained that way until the early 2000s, and by 2016 it was 66.

The proportion of people diagnosed with colorectal cancer in the United States is lower in people age 65 and older, but is higher in young adults.

Scientists knew that cases of colorectal cancer were increasing in younger age groups. “But I was surprised how fast it was happening,” said Rebecca Siegel, co-author and research director of a research study at the American Cancer Society in Atlanta.

“This report is very important because it not only provides a snapshot of the current colorectal cancer burden, but also provides a window into the future,” Siegel said.

As the number of young adults continues to increase, physicians face unique challenges such as the need to maintain fertility and sexual function, as well as the risk of long-term therapeutic effects due to her added life expectancy.

The obesity epidemic may be a factor

The report included, inter alia, data on colorectal cancer cases and deaths from the National Cancer Institute and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Based on an analysis of the data, the researchers found that the number of cases of colorectal cancer among people under the age of 50 has increased since the mid-1990s.

The study found that between 2012 and 2016, the incidence in that age group increased 2.2% each year, including tumors found in both the colon and rectum.

Researchers found that in adults between the ages of 50 and 64, the incidence of colorectal cancer declined in the 2000s, then the course reversed, with an annual increase of 1% between 2011 and 2016. It was It continued in the 2000s, and the percentage decreased 3.3% every year from 2011 to 2016.

“Most of the lower incidence in the elderly is due to increased screening, but the cause of the increased incidence in the younger age group is still unknown,” Siegel said.

“The prevalence of obesity is probably the contributor, but it doesn’t seem to be the only cause,” she said. “Diet has a major impact on the risk of colorectal cancer, and the various things we consume, including drugs such as antibiotics, play a role in determining gut health, especially the microbes that make up our microbiome. There are many studies investigating how it affects.”

Physicians need to follow up on young patients

This review highlighted the probable mortality from colorectal cancer and determined future predictions for this disease.

Colorectal cancer mortality was detected between 2008 and 2017, decreasing by 3% annually in adults 65 years and older and 0.6% annually in adults aged 50 to 64, but annually in adults younger than 50 years. It increased by 1.3%.

We also found that the Alaska natives’ death rate was almost three times that of whites and about twice that of blacks, and that there was a continuing “significant disparity” between race and geography.

Incidence rates were 30 per 100,000 Asian/Pacific islanders, 38.6 whites, 45.7 blacks, and 89 Alaska indigenous people, according to the data.

Research was limited and scientists could not accurately determine why a particular reduction or increase in colorectal cancer occurred among different age groups.

Nevertheless, researchers were able to predict future trends by predicting an estimated 53,200 deaths from colorectal cancer in 2020 at 7% (3,640) in adults under the age of 50.

The analysis also predicted 147,950 newly diagnosed cases of colorectal cancer in the United States this year, or about 12%, or 17,930 cases diagnosed in adults under the age of 50.

The analysis could increase screening consensus by age 50, Siegel said.
