Death of “Black Panther” actor raises awareness of colon cancer
Lansing, Michigan (WILX)-Actor Chadwick Bossman is in a quiet battle between colon cancer and premature death, loudly discussing awareness and screening.
His story resonates with people like Angela Bower Socks, which first appeared at the age of 20. Since then, she has been fighting a variety of other things, such as Crohn’s disease, an inflammatory bowel disease.

Gordon Srkalovic, director of clinical trials and doctors at Sparrow Herbert-Herman Cancer Center, says more and more people are developing colon cancer at a younger age.
“There is evidence that there was a 22% increase in the number of color cancer patients under the age of 50 between 2003 and 2013,” Srkalovic said.
Knowing the risks can help you decide if you should be screened earlier than the 45-year-old American Cancer Society recommends.
“There are many patients at high risk of colorectal cancer, especially if some of the family members have early-stage colorectal cancer and some type of growth in the polyp or colon.” Skalovich ..
He says those patients should actually start screening at age 20.
Early detection is key to the best chances of survival, Srkalovic said. Therefore, it is helpful to know the most common symptoms.
“Sometimes there is abdominal discomfort, but the main ones are actually changes in bowel habits and bleeding,” Srkalovic said.
He added that smoking, drinking, lack of exercise, obesity, age, and diet could also carry the risk of developing the disease.
About 150,000 Americans are diagnosed with colon cancer each year. The percentage of African Americans is higher than any other race or ethnic group in the country.
