The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention did not “retard” COVID-19 deaths, a social media post said this number fell from about 154,000 to just over 9,000.

The word “only 6%” became widespread on Twitter over the weekend as proponents of QAnon’s conspiracy theory promoted tweets, with CDC updating records and only 6% of US deaths related to COVID-19. It falsely suggested that it was justified. President Donald Trump was among those who tweeted the information, which was later removed by Twitter for violating platform rules.

The post that received hundreds of thousands of shares online was based on a regularly updated CDC data table showing the underlying status of people who died at COVID-19. Conditions included , Diabetes and obesity, and problems caused by COVID-19 itself, such as respiratory failure and pneumonia.

of CDC data table Based on analysis of death certificate due to COVID-19. For 6% of deaths, the CDC points out that only COVID-19 was the cause.

The other 94% list COVID-19 and other conditions together. On average, of these deaths, there were 2.6 additional conditions or causes of death per death, according to the Department of Public Health.

According to the CDC, as of August 26, the death toll for COVID-19 was 161,332. Weekend social media users posted old screenshots of data showing 153,504 deaths. The post uses a figure of 6% and claims that the death toll in the United States was much lower at 9,210.

“The CDC pedaled (quietly) back and adjusted COVID deaths in the US from 153,504 to 9,210, admitting that number was very (very) large and 94% lost.” Said the post shared on Facebook.

But such claims misrepresent the data. Deaths are not excluded from the COVID-19 counts because the person is obese or has diabetes or dementia. Those with heart problems can still be killed by COVID-19, It can be said that both contribute.

According to experts, it’s not surprising that the few people who died of COVID-19 did not have the underlying condition listed on their death certificate. It is rare that there are no multiple medical problems at the time of death.

“The root cause of death is the beginning of a series of events that ultimately lead to human death,” said Dr. Robert Anderson, who oversees CDC’s statistical study of death. “In 92% of all deaths that mention COVID-19, COVID-19 is listed as the root cause of death.”

Also, the death certificate should list the contributing causes and conditions, but past research has shown that the document is not complete. Doctors may not know or identify all the reasons behind a particular ..

More importantly, the CDC numbers show what healthcare professionals have said since the outbreak of the pandemic. That is, the virus tends to have a more serious impact on people with the underlying disorder.

For example, people died of diabetes rather than diabetes, said Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University.

“Without the COVID virus infection, these people would still be alive today,” he said. “Yes, they contribute to the underlying chronic health factors, but it was the COVID virus that killed them.”
