Polio is a highly infectious viral disease transmitted from person to person that grows in the intestine primarily through the faecal-oral route or, less frequently, through contaminated water or food. A 200-fold infection usually causes irreversible paralysis of the lower limbs. In paralyzed people, 5-10% die when their respiratory muscles fail. Polio mainly affects children under the age of five.
