Bee venom “kills some breast cancer cells”

Australian scientists say venom from honeybees was found to destroy aggressive breast cancer cells in the lab.
The venom-and its compound, called melittin-was used against two types of cancer that are difficult to treat: triple negative and rich in HER2.
This finding is described as “exciting,” but scientists warn that further testing is needed.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women worldwide.
While there are thousands of chemicals in the lab that can fight cancer cells, scientists say that few can be produced to treat humans.
Bee venom has previously been discovered to have anti-cancer properties against other types of cancer such as melanoma.

What did the researchers find?
We tested more than 300 bee and bumblebee venoms.
The honey bee extract turned out to be “very potent”, said Ciara Duffy, a 25-year-old PhD researcher who led the study.
It was found that some concentrations of venom killed cancer cells within an hour, with minimal harm to other cells. However, toxicity increased at other dose levels.
Image copyrightHarry Perkins InstituteResearchers have also found that melittin compounds themselves are effective in “stopping” or destroying the growth of cancer cells.
Melittin occurs naturally in bee venom, but it can also be produced synthetically.
Traditionally, triple-negative breast cancer-one of the most aggressive types-has been treated with surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. It accounts for 10 to 15% of breast cancer.
Can it be used in the future?
On Wednesday, a lead scientist in Western Australia said the study was “incredibly inspiring.”
“This study demonstrates how melittin interferes with signal transduction pathways in breast cancer cells to reduce cell replication,” said Professor Peter Klinken.
“It provides another great example of where natural compounds can be used to treat human diseases.”
But researchers warn that more work needs to be done to see if the venom actually acts as an anticancer drug on a large scale.
Other cancer researchers agree. “It’s a very early stage,” said Associate Professor Alex Swerbrick of the Garvan Institute of Medicine in Sydney.
“Many compounds can kill breast cancer cells in dishes and mice, but there’s a long way to go from finding them to something that can change clinical practice,” he told the BBC. ..
