Men who drank an average of one glass of wine or one-quarter pint of beer each day were 10% more prone to obesity and metabolic syndrome.
One to two glasses of wine, or beer up to one pint, had odds of 22% and 25% higher, respectively, and beyond that rose to 34% and 42%.
This was compared to a person who had never drank.

A glass of wine per day increased the risk of obesity by 9%, but the probability of metabolic syndrome was reduced by 3% (compared to non-drinkers).

The study, presented at virtual European and international conferences on obesity, was based on more than 14 million men and 12 million women in South Korea.
