Coffee Drinkers Can Dodge Liver Damage | West Coast Sentry
Coffee lovers who are healthy but overly drunk have a low risk of developing alcohol-induced cirrhosis, killing 300,000 people worldwide each year.
This is one of the key findings of a new study by Centenary Institute, an independent medical research institute attached to the University of Sydney, in collaboration with the Genom ALC Consortium, which many research groups around the world are working together.
The purpose of this study was to identify the risks associated with cirrhosis in heavy drinkers and to gain insight into how drinking can prevent or reduce cirrhosis.
The first author of this study, published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, is Dr John Whitfield of the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute.
Dr. Whitfield said the study found evidence that the increased risk of developing alcohol-induced cirrhosis could be inherited, especially from the father.
“Our study has shown that if a father dies of liver disease due to alcoholism, the risk of cirrhosis in an individual is significantly increased,” he added.
“We also found that drinkers at high risk of drinking coffee were less likely to develop cirrhosis, and drinking tea had a slightly lower risk.”
Only a few, about 10 to 15%, of high-risk drinkers develop alcoholic cirrhosis.

She emphasized that the best way to reduce the harm from alcohol is to reduce or eliminate it, but admit it is difficult for many.
Timothy Morgan, the co-author of the study, noted that both obesity and diabetes were independently associated with an increased risk of alcohol-induced cirrhosis.
“Drinkers who are at high risk of developing diabetes in middle age are particularly likely to develop cirrhosis,” he said.
Seth said the findings could have significant public health implications.
“Measures such as maintaining a healthy weight, intensive treatment of diabetes or pre-diabetes, and encouraging coffee consumption could be useful lifestyle interventions to reduce the risk of alcoholic cirrhosis in high-risk drinkers. There is,” she said.
