A glass of wine or beer a day is bad for your health

Other factors were considered, including participant age, exercise level, smoking history and income.

Dr. Hye Jung Shin, the lead author of the National Medical Center in Seoul, South Korea, said: “Light alcohol intake is also associated with metabolic syndrome.

“Ingesting more than half of a standard alcoholic beverage per day increases the risk of obesity and metabolic syndrome in both men and women, with a proportional increase in alcohol consumption.

“There were significant correlations between alcohol consumption and obesity after adjusting for age, exercise, smoking, and income in this population, and between alcohol consumption and metabolic syndrome.

Both men and women who consumed more alcohol were more likely to be obese. The same result is observed in metabolic syndrome.

“Our results suggest that adult males and females drinking more than half of their standard drink per day increase their risk of obesity and metabolic syndrome in proportion to their alcohol consumption.”

• Alcopop, 275ml: 1.5 units
• Small glass of wine, 125 ml: 1.5 units
• Lager, beer or cider bottle, 330 ml: 1.7 units
• Can of lager, beer, or cider, 440 ml: 2 units
• Low intensity lager, beer, or cider pints: 2 units
• Standard glass wine, 175ml: 2.1 units
• High-intensity lager, beer, or cider pints: 3 units
• One glass of wine (250 ml): 3 units

NHS recommends the following:

• Men and women are regularly advised not to drink more than 14 units per week
• If you regularly take 14 units per week, continue drinking for at least 3 days
• If you want to reduce it, be sure to spend several days on drinking bans every week
