BCG vaccine safe for the elderly can protect against respiratory infections: a study

The BCG vaccine, which is often given to children to prevent tuberculosis, can be safely given to older people and can protect them from various infections. But the study, published in Cell, warns that it’s unclear whether vaccines can prevent COVID-19 in the older parts of the population.
Scientists, including researchers at the Medical Center of the University of Radobud in the Netherlands, have shown that older people benefit from the vaccine by an effect called “trained immunity.” The study evaluated 198 elderly people who received either a placebo or BCG vaccine at discharge from the hospital.
According to scientists, ACTIVATE research had already begun before the corona pandemic. “Two years ago, we started the ACTIVATE study to show whether BCG vaccination could prevent the infection of vulnerable older people,” said co-author Mihai Netea of Radboud University Medical Center. States. “Patients age 65 and older admitted to the hospital were randomized and received BCG or placebo vaccination at discharge. They were followed for one year to see if BCG could protect against a wide range of infections,” Netea said. Stated. Most protection appears to be (probably) against viral-origin respiratory infections, but scientists have not yet determined whether BCG also works against COVID-19. They further added that several studies were underway to specifically examine the effects of BCG on COVID-19. Only these follow-ups can clarify whether BCG vaccination can protect against infection with the novel coronavirus, researchers say.
“In addition to the apparent impact of BCG vaccination on overall infection, the most important observation was that BCG could protect primarily against respiratory infections,” Evangelos J. Giamarellos-, another co-author of the study. Bourboulis said. “The older people who received the BCG vaccine had 75% fewer respiratory infections than those who received the placebo,” he added.
