1 Possible Case of Legionella Infection at DC VA Medical Center – NBC4 Washington
The News4 I team found that at least one patient or staff member may have a Legionella infection within the Washington DC VA Medical Center. The medical center said it was handling its water supply system and asked patients to drink bottled water, wash their hands with disinfectant and bath with a sanitary wipe.
In an email to the staff on Wednesday morning, Medical Center Director Michael Heimall said: “To ensure the safety of our veterans and staff, we are working all night to carry out repairs on our water system. For these reasons, we will not be able to Do not drink, take a shower or wash your hands.”

Authorities said in a statement that the cleaning of the water system was completed on Thursday. The statement said, “The facility did a complete restoration of the water system, raising the water temperature to over 160 degrees Celsius, flushing the system for 30 minutes, and killing any legionella bacteria that might have been in the system.”
Legionella infections may have pneumonia-like symptoms and are more likely to affect patients over the age of 60 and those with other respiratory illnesses, including the Washington DC VA Medical Center and other Atlantic VA facility according to VA guidance issued by the manager overseeing the medium term. “Some people can develop Legionella pneumonia after inhaling a mist or vapor (small drops of water in the air) containing bacteria,” he said.
The lethal outbreak of Legionella led to a formal congressional investigation into VA Hospital in Pittsburgh in 2013. Since then, Legionella has been affecting other VA medical centers.
According to an email from Hymar, the medical center had plans to raise the water temperature to 160 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes on Wednesday to “heat eradicate” the water system. According to his email, the staff are also cleaning the ice machine.
