Too low vitamin D increases the chance of coronavirus infection

Although no cause or effect could be identified in the study, patients with untreated vitamin D deficiency (blood levels below 20 ng/mL) are more likely to be coronavirus-positive than patients with adequate vitamin D levels. It was twice as expensive. The researchers said.
“Our statistical analysis suggests that this may be the case for COVID-19 infections,” Melzer said in a news release from a medical center.

Researchers say more research is needed to determine whether vitamin D supplements reduce the risk of infection with the new coronavirus, and even the severity of COVID-19.
Dr. Len Horowitz is a pulmonologist and physician at Lennox Hill Hospital in New York City. Reading a new discovery, he said the study “indicated that” [vitamin] D plays an important role in the immune system. Horowitz suggested that pandemics might even increase levels of vitamin D deficiency.
“Because of urban life, especially “blockades,” reduced exposure to sunlight, and therefore more D deficiency was found in my practice,” he said.
Fortunately, vitamin D supplements are available, so an easy cure is at hand. “The appropriate dose depends on the patient’s size and exposure to sunlight and can be easily measured with a simple blood test,” Horowitz said.
The Meltzer group believes that research is needed to identify the most effective vitamin D supplementation strategies for specific groups of people. Researchers in Chicago have said they have already started several clinical trials.
