Mosquito-borne EEE virus kills horses in Barry County
Barry County, Michigan – Horses died of mosquito-borne Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in Barry County, according to health officials.
According to a news release issued by the Health Department on Friday, the Barry Eaton District Health Department was notified of horse deaths on Thursday, September 3rd. This is the first confirmed animal case of EEE in Barry County this year, further expanding the geographical area in which EEE was discovered.
At this time, health authorities have not confirmed any other animal or human cases of this disease in Barry or Eaton counties.
Barry County horses are the 13th confirmed EEE case to date in horses in 5 counties in Michigan. So far, EEE horses have been identified in the counties of Clare, Kent, Newwaygo and Montcalm.
Health officials say people living or visiting Barry or Eaton counties should take precautions to prevent mosquito bites due to the prevalence of EEE-borne mosquitoes this year. - Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants outdoors. Apply insect repellent to your clothing to prevent insect bites.
- Maintain window and door screenings that help keep mosquitoes outdoors.
- Drain water from mosquito breeding areas around your house, such as a bucket, an unused children’s pool, old tires, or similar places where mosquitoes can spawn.
- Use the internet and fans in the outdoor dining area.
