First person’s death due to EEE reported in Chippewa County
Chippewa County, Wisconsin (WEAU)-The Wisconsin Department of Health (DHS) and Chippewa County Department of Health have confirmed that a woman in her 60s who lived in Chippewa County died of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). This is so far the second human case of EEE this year, the other in Eau Claire County. This is the first case of EEE that resulted in death this year.
“It’s very sad to report that one of our fellow Wisconsin contracted and passed away for EEE. This is the second confirmed case of EEE in our state this year, The severity of this infection cannot be overstated,” warns Interim Health Officer Stephanie Smiley. “Since mosquitoes are still active in Wisconsin, we want people to continue to take steps to protect themselves from mosquito bites.”
Nine cases of EEE were reported in horses this year. All of them were in the northwestern part of the state, four of which were from Chippewa County. These cases in animals, and now in two residents of our community, represent unusually high levels of EEE activity in the state.
The EEE virus is a rare but deadly disease that can affect people of all ages. Symptoms begin 3-10 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Brain inflammation and swelling, called encephalitis, are the most dangerous and frequent serious complications. The last human case of EEE was reported in 2017 in Wisconsin.
EEE can spread to humans by being bitten by an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes feed on infected birds and acquire the EEE virus. The virus does not spread from person to person, or between animals and humans.
Even if the temperature drops, the risk of spread of EEE and other diseases by mosquitoes can persist for most of the fall, as long as they are active. The best prevention tool is to prevent mosquito bites.
The DHS and Chippewa County Health Department encourage all residents to take the following precautions:
Prevent mosquito bites
Apply insect repellent to exposed skin or clothing with DEET, picaridine, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535.
Treat clothing with permethrin before going outdoors. Do not apply permethrin directly to the skin.
Consider rescheduling outdoor activities when mosquitoes are most active at night or early morning.
When wearing outdoors, wear long sleeves, long pants and socks to keep mosquitoes away from your skin.
Mosquito repellent your home
To prevent mosquitoes from entering your house, make sure the window and door screens are undamaged and firmly secured.
Prevents mosquitoes from breeding around your home by removing stagnant water around your property, such as tin cans, plastic containers, flower pots, scrap tires, gutters, and downspouts.
When not using a wheelbarrow, children’s pool, bucket, small boat such as a canoe or kayak, flip it over.
At least every 3 days, change the water in the bird’s bath and pet dishes.
Clean and chlorinate the swimming pool, outdoor sauna and hot tub. Drain water from the pool cover.
Tall grasses, weeds and vines are mowed or mowed during the hot day as mosquitoes rest in these areas.
Protect animals
Animal owners need to reduce the potential mosquito breeding grounds on their premises by removing water from containers such as buckets, tires and play pools, especially after heavy rainfall.
Owners should also talk to their veterinarian about mosquito repellents approved for use in animals and vaccination to prevent WNV and EEE.
