First eastern equine encephalitis death confirmed in Wisconsin
The Wisconsin Department of Health and Chippewa County Department of Health confirmed on Saturday the first person to die from eastern equine encephalitis. This is the second human case in the state this year, and the first is fatal.
The victim was described as a woman in her sixties living in Chippewa County.
According to the news release sent by the state, Eastern equine encephalitis Viruses are rare. However, a potentially fatal disease that can affect people of all ages. The virus is transmitted to humans by being bitten by an infected mosquito, which feeds on the infected bird and acquires it.
Nine cases of EEE were reported in horses this year, all in the northwestern part of the state. Four of the cases were in Chippewa County.
In the statement, interim state health official Stephanie Smiley said the number of cases reported this year represents “an unusually high level of EEE activity in the state.”
Symptoms of EEE usually begin 3 to 10 days after a person is bitten by an infected mosquito. Brain inflammation and swelling, often called encephalitis, are the most frequent and dangerous complications.
The virus does not spread from person to person, or between animals and humans.
Prior to this year, the last human case of EEE was reported in 2017.
State and Chippewa County Health Department employees encourage residents to take the following precautions to prevent mosquito bites:
- Apply insect repellent with DEET, picaridine, lemon eucalyptus oil or IR3535 and apply to exposed skin and clothing.
- Treat clothing with permethrin before going outdoors. Do not apply permethrin directly to your skin.
- Consider rescheduling outdoor activities when mosquitoes are most active at night or early morning.
- Wear long sleeves, long pants and socks outdoors to keep mosquitoes away from your skin.
