Covid-19 reveals study not characterized by cytokine storm

A new study disagrees with previous assumptions and shows that disease severity in Covid-19 patients may not be due to a cytokine storm.
Inflammatory proteins, also known as cytokines, play an important role in the immune response. If this immune response is too strong, a phenomenon known as the “cytokine storm” can harm the patient. Although not clearly defined, the cytokine storm is believed to be the hallmark of Covid-19.
In many cases, various cytokines have been evaluated and not compared with other diseases. Therefore, there is uncertainty and suspicion regarding cytokine storms in these patients. A new study published in the journal JAMA could impact the treatment of these patients.
Researchers at the Radboud University Medical Center in the Netherlands measured the levels of three essential cytokines in the blood of patients who received intensive care under several different conditions. They included Covid-19 patients who met the criteria for Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (ARDS), patients with bacterial septic shock (with or without ARDS), and patients who received intensive care after cardiac arrest or severe disease. These measurements were taken at trauma.
Cytokines were measured using the same method for each group of patients.
“Cytokine levels were not significantly elevated in patients with Covid-19 compared to those with septic shock and ARDS. No severe lung disease compared to patients with septic shock without ARDS If not, patients with Covid-19 have significantly lower levels of IL-6 and IL-8.”
Cytokine levels in Covid-19 patients are similar to those in IC patients with trauma or cardiac arrest, a condition not seen in cytokine storms.
