UCSF Development Device that Allows the Human Brain to Control Machines – CBS San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) — It may sound like science fiction, but recent technological advances have allowed humans to directly control a device by simply thinking about it.
The present invention is a new type of brain computer interface (BCI) that uses cortical electroencephalography (ECoG) signals to connect the brain to electrical devices. When surgically implanted, this device takes your brain’s signals and translates them into commands that can control external devices such as a bionic hand.
Its electrode array is about the size of a post-it note, but don’t let that size fool you. It’s a technical marvel.
“It’s a remarkable time for neuroscience and engineering,” said Dr. Karunesh Ganguly, a neuroscientist and clinical neurologist at UCSF.
The device holds high expectations for people with debilitating neurological disorders. Ganguly sees many brain-injured or ill patients in his clinical practice.
“I see patients suffering from stroke, ALS, muscular dystrophy, and all kinds of untreated disorders, and they often get paralyzed. They can’t move their arms or legs.” Ganguly said.
The UCSF team tested it in stroke patients and published their findings at Nature Biotechnology. The report details how this BCI improves on previous models because it uses machine learning and artificial intelligence to learn in line with brain learning.
Neuroscientists have explained that existing systems require daily resets and frequent recalibrations. This is not because you remember what you learned. Dr. Ganguly calls it “plug and play”.
“What our machine learning was doing. It was slowly tracking his brain activity, essentially co-learning. So he’s learning. The system is learning. And they work together in a kind of collaborative work,” explained Dr. Gangley.
