PEI pharmacist asks the state to help offset the high costs of vaccination against influenza during COVID

PEI pharmacists are demanding more money from the state when they are ready to get a flu shot under the all-new COVID-19 rule.

According to the PEI Pharmacists Association, not only prescreening, scheduling, and monitoring, but also labor costs for off-site and drive-through influenza clinics.

Pharmacists will have to pay more for the personal protective equipment needed to perform a flu shot and the additional costs associated with enhanced cleaning.

Erin MacKenzie, Secretary-General of the PEI Pharmacists Association, expressed concern during a legislative committee meeting on Wednesday while the state was considering a response to an ongoing global pandemic.

“We know that costs will increase. We know that the cost of providing this service can only increase,” McKenzie said in an interview following her presentation to PEI MLA. Said.

“So the members were very frustrated. They didn’t feel their services were being valued. During the COVID-19 crisis, a program was put in place to keep doctor’s claims unaffected. Was being done.

“When the pandemic struck Prince Edward Island, the pharmacists didn’t go anywhere, and they remain immobile in serving the offer and entertainment without any discussion of reward models.”

Meeting with Minister

The association expressed concern to the state in early July.

Health Minister James Aylward met with the Society in August and was told to contact the state seven to ten days later.

So far, that’s not happening.

In a statement to CBC News, the state said it would appreciate the association’s concerns.

The state said they provided PPE if the association could not secure enough to provide the influenza vaccine.

But nowhere in the statement did the state say to pay for its PPE or increase the fees paid to pharmacists.

Currently, the state pays pharmacists for every flu shot. The pharmacist says he was vaccinated against influenza eight times an hour.

With the new COVID-19 rules, that number is expected to be halved.

“I feel faint”

Liberal MLA Heath McDonald said it was “wowing” that the Society of Pharmacists was having a very difficult time trying to get a response from the state government. He said pharmacists are front-line staff.

“Today’s presenter’s face shows that they’re very concerned,” McDonald’s said.

“Currently, there are 150 pharmacists in PEI on the entire island and in rural areas, currently vaccination against thousands of islanders for influenza, and it is possible that COVID-19 has caused influenza vaccination. There is preparation for that.”

More than half of all islanders seeking flu shots arrive at a nearby pharmacy.

The Pharmacists Association expects that number to increase this year.

Health officials say demand for influenza vaccination is expected to increase by at least 25% this year.

Mr McKenzie said COVID-19 has shown that the state needs to enable pharmacists to practice the full range of education. She said almost all of the symptoms being treated through these out-of-island services could be handled by pharmacists in community throughout the island while the state continues to expand virtual and telemedicine. ..

“Since 2008, Alberta pharmacists have been able to provide care within their scope of work,” MacKenzie said.

“PEI pharmacists have been working for over a decade to practice in our full range of education.”
