Blazo County Health District confirms West Nile virus positive by mosquito test for 3 consecutive weeks

Bryan, Texas (KBTX)-The Brazos County Health District has confirmed that mosquitoes have been locally trapped and positive for West Nile virus for three consecutive weeks.

The following is a press release from the health district.

A mosquito surveillance unit in the Brazos County Health District has confirmed that mosquito samples are positive for West Nile virus (WNV). The mosquito trap was at Brian’s 77802 zip code. This is the third consecutive week in which mosquito samples have been positive in Brazos County. Keep in mind that all of Brazos County should be considered positive for WNV.

Brazos County Health District officials have notified other members of the Vector Surveillance and Control Partnership, along with Bryan, College Station, and the University of Texas A & M.

All residents of Brazos County are strongly advised to use 4D to reduce their exposure to mosquitoes.

DEET all day, every day: Always outside, always use insect repellents, including the active ingredient DEET or other EPA-registered repellents, and always follow the instructions on the label.
dress: Outside, wear long, loose, light-colored clothing.
drain: Drain or dispose of all water around and around your home or workplace where mosquitoes can spawn.
all day: Daytime, dusk, dawn – Limit time outdoors. Mosquitoes are active day and night.

West Nile virus is transmitted by being bitten by infected mosquitoes. Most people exposed to the virus do not get sick, but about 20% develop symptoms such as headache, fever, body pain, joint pain, nausea, and fatigue. In less than 1%, the virus affects the nervous system, leading to neck stiffness, disorientation, tremor, cramps, paralysis, and even more serious illnesses that can lead to death.

There are no cures or vaccines to prevent West Nile virus infection. According to the Texas Department of Health, Texas has reported more than 3,300 cases of West Nile disease in the last decade, including 172 deaths.
