The Michigan Department of Health is urging authorities to rescheduling outdoor activities as EEE cases increase.
Lansing, Michigan. – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has asked local authorities in counties affected by Eastern Equine Encephalitis to postpone, reschedule, or cancel outdoor activities that occur at dusk or after evening, especially those involving children. This includes events such as midnight sports practice and games. The MDHHS recommendations have been prepared with great care to protect public health and apply until the first strong frost of the year.
As of Thursday, September 10, 19 horses in nine Michigan counties, including Barry, Claire, Isabella, Jackson, Kent, Mecosta, Montcalm, New Weigo, and Auckland, have been confirmed to have EEE. Cases of other animals are under investigation.
This is twice as many animal cases as last year. To date, no human cases have been identified. EEE vaccine is available for horses, but not for humans.
In 2019, there were 10 human cases of EEE in Michigan. This is the same as the total number of cases over the last 10 years.
Last year, Michigan accounted for 25% of EEE cases nationwide. It is unclear exactly why some years are more severe than others, even though weather, such as temperature and precipitation, is believed to have an effect.

Therefore, horse cases mean that people in the area are also at risk. EEE is one of the most dangerous mosquito-borne diseases in the United States, with a 33% mortality rate for those who get sick. People under the age of 15 and over the age of 50 have the highest risk of serious illness after infection.
Signs of EEE infection include fever, chills, and the sudden onset of pain in the body and joints, which can progress to severe encephalitis, causing headaches, disorientation, tremor, seizures, and paralysis. If you suspect you are experiencing any of these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider. Permanent brain damage, coma and death can also occur in some cases.
Residents should continue to protect themselves from mosquito bites in the following ways:
- Avoid being outdoors from dusk to dawn when mosquitoes carrying the EEE virus are most active.
- Apply insect repellents, including the active ingredient DEET or other US Environmental Protection Agency approved products, to exposed skin and clothing and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers outdoors. Apply an insect repellent to your clothing to prevent insect bites.
- Maintain window and door screening to help keep mosquitoes outdoors.
- Drain water from mosquito breeding sites around the house, such as buckets, unused children’s pools, old tires, or similar areas where mosquitoes can spawn.
- Use the net or fans in the outdoor dining area.
