DuPage County Coronavirus: Health officials warn of increased COVID mortality, cases are increasing in older patients
With these two key indicators, the county has reached a “warning level” of potential behavior. And since the beginning of summer, the infection rate has quadrupled.

At Edward Hospital in Naperville, the number of cases has increased by 20-30% over the past week.
“Don’t be vigilant, that’s not the end,” requested Dr. Jonathan Pinsky, director of infection control at Edward Hospital. “I still have a lot of COVIDs. I know I’m tired of wearing masks and staying at home, but this will be a long way to go.”
During the summer, Dr. Pinsky said most of the hospital cases involved socially infected young people. But now we see more elderly patients.
“Some of them are young families who brought them home,” Pinsky said.
Last week there were 89 new cases for every 100,000 people in DuPage. This is an increase from 77 cases last week, well above the goal of less than 50 cases. This is the recommended level to allow students to return to school.

This week, students and parents held rallies in Hindsdale and Wheaton to call for face-to-face instruction and autumn sports.
“There are concerns,” said Karen Ayala, executive director of DuPage County Health Department. “We are not in a serious crisis in DuPage County regarding COVID, but we are pointing some indicators in the wrong direction.”
DuPage County is one of the 30 counties in Illinois currently at “warning level”. The other is DeKalb County, where Northern Illinois University is moving undergraduate classes online for two weeks.
“Then young people can infect older people, and they are people who are admitted to the hospital,” said Dr. Pinsky.
Authorities hope that more mask wear and social distance will lower the numbers and prevent the need for stricter measures at DuPage.
