IDPH: First human case of West Nile virus in Illinois in 2020
The Illinois Public Health Service made the following announcement on 9 September:
The Illinois Public Health Service (IDPH) reports the first confirmed human case of West Nile virus in Illinois in 2020. Residents of DuPage County in their 40s became ill in mid-August.

The West Nile virus was infected by being bitten by a Culex mosquito, commonly called Culex, and picked up the virus by feeding infected birds. Precautionary measures to combat bites include practicing the three “Rs” -reduction, repulsion, and reporting.
Mitigation-Make sure you have a screen that fits the door and window exactly. Repair or replace screens with crevices or other openings. Be sure to keep the doors and windows closed.
o Eliminate or update weekly all sources of potential mosquito breeding, including bird tubs, ponds, flowerpots, water pools, old tires, and other containers of water.
REPEL-For outdoors, wear shoes and socks, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt, and apply insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, lemon eucalyptus oil, or IR 3535 as instructed on the label. Talk to your doctor before using repellents on infants.
Report-Reports where water has been stagnant for more than a week, such as roadside ditches, flooded gardens, and other areas where mosquitoes can grow. Local health departments and city governments may be able to add larval control agents to the water that kills the larvae.
West Nile virus monitoring in Illinois includes testing for batches of mosquitoes, crows, bluejaes, robins, and other dead birds, as well as testing for humans with symptoms like West Nile virus. Any observer of a sick or dying crow, blue jay, robin, or other dead bird should contact the local health center to determine if the bird will be picked up for inspection.
