Columbia, SC (FOX Carolina) — On Monday, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environment said it had begun implementing an update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to track and report COVID-19.
DHEC said South Carolina will comply with new federal standards to ensure that the virus is reported uniformly across the country.
“The CDC’s update of the COVID-19 case definition is a normal and expected change to address what we are learning about the diagnostic tests and clinical symptoms of this virus that did not exist a year ago.” Dr. Lindabel said. South Carolina Epidemiologist News Release.. “The updated reporting standards are a typical development when new conditions are encountered. Doctors and scientists around the world continue to discover this deadly disease, ensuring accurate and uniform counting of cases. The more you can, the more you can learn how to prevent it. “
A complete update to the CDC COVID-19 standard is available here..
According to DHEC, there are three most notable changes:
- Positive antibody results no longer classify individuals as presumptive cases
- Positive antigen testing from respiratory specimens that detect viral proteins classifies individuals as putative cases
- A new “Suspicious Cases” category was created for individuals who tested positive for antibodies or antigens from autopsy specimens of individuals who were not previously identified as cases.
“Suspicious cases” refers to individuals with the lowest evidence of COVID-19 infection, and all suspicious cases are tracked and investigated to become possible or confirmed cases of these individuals. Check if. However, the CDC advises not to report these suspicious cases as part of the state’s total number of cases. DHEC states that it will follow federal guidance, and DHEC will continue to report daily only cases that may have been identified.
DHEC explained that antibody-positive results are classified as suspicious cases.
“Basically, these updated COVID-19 case definitions show that antibody test results are currently unreliable enough to consider an individual as a confirmed or possible case, but respiratory specimens. Antigen testing from is reliable enough to turn someone into a possible case, “further explained in a news release Dr. Brannon Traxler, Interim Director of Public Health, DHEC. “Healthcare professionals will learn more about COVID-19 and can expect further updates to case definitions and reporting criteria. This is typical of all diseases and is not unique to COVID-19. This helps to put in place a uniform system for accurately investigating how the disease affects the population. “
The CDC has also updated the clinical manifestations for diagnosing COVID-19. New symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, congestion and runny nose have been added.
Changes in taste and smell currently meet only clinical criteria and do not need to be accompanied by other symptoms, DHEC explained.
DHEC encourages people with these symptoms I take the test.
Also on Monday, DHEC announced 525 newly confirmed viral cases, 16 likely cases, and 7 additional viral deaths.
This brings the total number of confirmed cases across South Carolina to 130,256, an estimated 2,424 cases, 2,922 confirmed deaths, and an estimated 155 deaths.
