CDC Updates Criteria for Tracking and Reporting COVID-19 Cases
Columbia, SC (WRDW / WAGT)-South Carolina complies with these federal standards to ensure uniform virus reporting throughout the country.
“The updated reporting standards are typical developments when we encounter new conditions,” South Carolina epidemiologist Dr. Linda Bell said in a release. “Doctors and scientists around the world continue to discover this deadly disease, and the more accurately and evenly we can count cases, the more we can learn how to prevent it.”
A complete update to the CDC COVID-19 standard is available here.. The three most notable changes are:
- Positive antibody test results no longer classify individuals as presumed cases
- Positive antigen testing from respiratory specimens that detect viral proteins classifies individuals as putative cases
- A new “suspicious case” category was created for individuals with a positive antibody or antigen test from autopsy specimens of individuals who were not previously identified as cases.
The suspicious case category represents people with the lowest evidence of infection with the virus and is followed up to determine if these individuals are likely or confirmed cases. Antibody positive results are classified as suspicious cases.
The CDC has also updated the clinical manifestations for diagnosing COVID-19:
New symptoms added include nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, congestion or runny nose. Taste or olfactory changes currently meet only clinical criteria and do not need to be accompanied by other symptoms.
DHEC encourages anyone with these symptoms to take the test. The ministry also tests at least once a month for people who go out regularly and are around the community or others, or who cannot be socially distanced or wear masks, regardless of their symptoms. We recommend that you take it.
