Some psoriasis medications also help prevent heart disease
Tuesday, September 15, 2020 (HealthDay News)-A new study suggests that biological treatments for psoriasis, a skin disease, may reduce the risk of heart disease in patients.
Chronic inflammation in patients with psoriasis is associated with the development of plaques in the heart arteries and increases the risk of coronary artery disease. In biological therapy, patients receive protein-based injections to reduce inflammation.
“This is the first time that human imaging studies have shown what untreated inflammation can bring to the arteries of the heart, and we can undo this damage,” he said. Dr. Nehal Mehta, senior author of the study, said. He is responsible for the National Heart Institute for Inflammation and Cardiovascular Diseases.
“Untreated inflammation is dangerous. We’re just waiting for a heart attack or stroke,” Mehta added.
This study focused on a dangerous type of coronary plaque called the lipid-rich necrotic core. It is composed of dead cells and cell debris and tends to rupture. Rupture of plaque can cause a heart attack or stroke.
The study included 209 patients with psoriasis aged 37-62 years. They were selected to receive biological therapy (124 patients) or were assigned to a control group and received topical cream and phototherapy (85 patients).
After one year of treatment, CT scans reduced coronary plaque in patients who received biotherapy by 8%, but slightly increased in patients in the control group.

“With ruptured and inflamed plaque, the risk of a heart attack increases five-fold within 10 years,” Mehta said in a news release in the journal.
Mehta said treatment with cholesterol-lowering statins reduced coronary plaques by about 6% to 8%. “Similarly, treatment with our biotherapy reduced coronary plaque by the same amount after a year. These findings show that biotherapy to treat psoriasis is as good as cardio-arterial statin therapy. It suggests that it may be beneficial, “he added.
Along with patients with psoriasis, the results of this study, along with patients with psoriasis, may affect people with other chronic inflammatory conditions such as HIV, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis, and increase the risk of heart disease.
