The Ministry of Natural Resources, Wisconsin released a report on Tuesday detailing the findings of PFAS in deer liver collected and analyzed from the JCI / Tyco Fire Technology Center in Marinette, Wisconsin.
The DNR and the Wisconsin Department of Health have issued a recommendation to “don’t eat” the liver from deer harvested within 5 miles of the JCI / Tyco Fire Technology Center (FTC). This includes areas of Marinette, Peshtigo, and the surrounding community. FTC is located in Marinette’s 2700 Industrial Park.
DNR conducted a survey on deer PFAS levels from the JCI / Tyco Fire Technology Center in Marinette. Twenty deer were harvested and tested for PFAS levels in muscle, heart, and liver tissue.
PFAS levels in muscle and heart tissue were very low or undetected. White-tailed deer muscles and hearts are unlikely to cause significant PFAS exposure to venison eaters from deer harvested within the 5-mile recommended area, according to DNR findings. Therefore, DNR and DHS have not issued PFAS-based consumption recommendations for deer muscle or heart from this location.
However, significant PFAS levels were found in deer liver tissue. The liver filters chemicals from the blood, and some chemicals, such as PFAS, can accumulate in the liver over time. These findings suggest that eating deer liver in this area is likely to result in significant exposure to PFAS. Wisconsin’s DHS and DNR recommend not eating liver from deer in the recommended area. Further investigation of deer PFAS from elsewhere is under consideration.
“We want to make it clear that we should be able to comfortably eat venison from deer harvested near the area,” said Tami Ryan, chief of the DNR Wildlife Health Division.
Perfluoro and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are artificial chemicals used in industrial processes and products. PFAS does not break down easily and can remain in an environment where people may be exposed for extended periods of time. PFAS can slowly accumulate in the human body over time due to repeated exposure. High levels of PFAS in the body are harmful to human health, especially pregnant women.
