Some pediatricians refused to treat their children if their parents refused the vaccine, study results
“This study of pediatricians in the United States reported that it was common practice to dismiss families who refused to vaccinate children, and half of pediatricians had a dismissal policy in their office. However, few people personally dismiss patients, “said a study by university researchers at the Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, which was released on Tuesday.
Researchers conducted a survey of US pediatricians between April and July 2019, and current practices, experience, and office policies regarding the dismissal of families who refuse or “expand” vaccination. Was evaluated.
More than half (51%) of the 303 pediatricians involved in the study reported that their office had a policy of dismissing their families if the vaccine was rejected. However, only 37% reported doing this themselves.
That number was higher than in a similar study conducted in 2012, with only 21% of pediatricians reporting that they often or constantly dismissed their families for refusing vaccination.
Refusal may change parents’ minds
Doctors refused vaccination (37%) and therefore more often dismissed their families than if they spread vaccination (6%), a similar pattern was specified in office policy.
Of the 154 doctors who reported dismissing their families because they refused the vaccine, 18% said they agreed to vaccination after constantly or often changing their minds and hearing about their policies.
Community and hospital-based clinic / health care organization settings were less likely to have severance policies than private practices. Midwestern private practices were also unlikely to have severance policies.
“Because vaccine denials are common, the high prevalence of dismissal of families who refuse is important,” the researchers said.
“Future work will be about the impact of this habit on vaccination rates, whether it will result in parents changing their thinking about vaccination, and whether it will reduce access to health care or undermine confidence in clinicians. You should look for it. “
Trends to be worried about
“I know my parents are worried,” AAP Dr. Sally Goza said in a statement released in May.
“We know how pediatricians can make their visits even safer, such as setting different times and places for healthy and sick children, rigorous cleaning practices, and conducting some telemedicine visits. We want the whole family to feel at ease with innovative and innovative methods. “
She added that pediatricians need to work with their families to vaccinate and identify their children as soon as possible and keep them up to date.
