Maternity hospital is full of pandemics
AS coronavirus infections are on the rise in the Philippines, and new mothers and medical staff at one of the world’s busiest maternity hospitals face growing anxiety during a pandemic.
Overcrowding has been a problem at the Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital in Manila for many years, and new mothers often have to share beds due to high hospitalization rates.
Currently, the hospital treats 589 patients, 181 more deliveries per day than the capacity of 408 beds, averaging 50 deliveries per day.
“I’m afraid I’ll get a virus here.
“I’m especially scared of my baby because my immune system is still weak,” said 21-year-old Szarina Pusiquit, who gave birth a few days ago.
Approximately 120 health care workers in the hospital have been infected with the coronavirus since the outbreak began, a hospital spokesman said.
Obstetrician and gynecologist Diana Kazipe, who spent 13 years in the hospital, said it was of great concern that she might not have revealed the symptoms of the coronavirus for fear of not being hospitalized.
“I think this poses a great risk not only to our healthcare professionals, but to other patients,” Kajipe said. The Philippines recorded 279,526 coronavirus infections. Most cases have been recorded in Manila, killing 4,830 people.
Despite the pressure, Kajipe said hospital health care workers were dealing with it.
“I’m glad I’m working with people from this institution that are elastic enough to stay with me during this pandemic,” she said.
