The low-cost rabies clinic in Northumberland County is on hold due to COVID-19 restrictions, but the message is to protect pets.
Low-cost rabies vaccination clinics, usually held in the fall, will be canceled in the cities of Haliburton, Northambaland and Kawartha Lakes.
Health protection public health manager Richard Ovcharovich says Quintenews veterinarians are usually reluctant to increase the number of people going through such clinics.
He emphasized that pet owners still have legal requirements to ensure that their dogs or cats are up to date with their rabies vaccinations.
He recently said there was an outbreak of raccoon dog rabies in western Ontario.
“If your pet is fighting another wild or stray animal about the problem, and if the wild animal has rabies, there is a good chance that you will get rabies.”
The health unit requested vaccination of pets only a few days ago World Rabies Day September 28 – A global event aimed at highlighting the importance of rabies vaccination to protect pets and people.
“Rabies are deadly, so vaccination of pets is an important part of animal care and being a responsible pet owner,” Ovcharovich adds. “Vaccination of four-legged friends also protects the health of family and loved ones.”
