“She is a fighter”: A 102-year-old woman survived both 1918 flu and COVID-19
“She believes she was given a lot of immunity as a result of the 1918 flu,” said her daughter, Julia Shapulse.
It was a feat that many people couldn’t boast about, and received a special reputation from their hometown. On Saturday, Mayor Joseph M. Petty drove Joseph M. Petty to visit Nashua’s life support facility, Chapar, and presented him with the city’s honorary key.
“She survived two pandemics,” Petty said. “She has experienced a lot. She is a fighter.”
Chapar was born and raised in Worcester. She was educated at Woster’s public school and then graduated from Fitchburg State University (now known as Fitchburg State University). After teaching at Abbott Street School in Worcester, she moved to Washington, DC to teach. She later became the principal of an elementary school in Nashua and worked as the administrator of a public school in Nashua.
According to her daughter, she doesn’t particularly like her first name, so she is nicknamed “Gerrie.” “She said that the name Mildred was the worst curse you could put on a girl,” she laughed.
Julia Shapars said she grew up listening to stories about how her mother survived the 1918 flu as an infant.
“She survived the 1918 flu and believes she gave her tremendous immunity to everything,” she said. “When I grew up, I never saw her get a cold or the flu.”
Back in May, Chapar had a fever and her temperature soared. She was tested for COVID-19 and the results returned positive. “By that time she had recovered,” said Julia Chapals. “It was a minor incident.”
In addition to the two pandemics, Julia Shapar said her mother survived two seizures. She also needed to get a shoulder replacement after she was injured trying to rescue the frog from the backyard pool. “For years after that, people gave frogs a gift for gag,” she said with a laugh.
Julia Chapar says that one of the keys to mother’s health and longevity is not to feel stressed and worried.
“Don’t worry, she always said that what you’re worried about now doesn’t matter for years to come,” Julia said. “So don’t sweat.”
Julia said she was honored that her mother received the Worcester city key last weekend.
“She was very impressed,” she said.
When the mayor appeared in a assisted living facility, she said, “She immediately named him and called Joe instead of the mayor.”
“It was really nice,” she said. “We were very impressed.”

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
