What are the different types of coronavirus testing?
In the United States, there are three broad categories of coronavirus testing. The second diagnoses whether there is an active infection and the third indicates whether it was previously infected with the virus.

Genetic testing
Most tests are looking for fragments of the genetic material of the virus and require a nasal swab taken by a medical professional and sent to the lab. This is considered the most accurate way to diagnose an infection, but it is not perfect. Swabs should be sampled enough to detect the virus.

Antigen testing is not as accurate as genetic testing, but it is cheap, fast, and requires less specialized testing equipment. They still need a nasal swab by a medical professional.

Antibody test
Antibody tests look for proteins that the body makes to fight infections in a patient’s blood sample. Antibodies are a sign that a person had previously had COVID-19.
Scientists still don’t know if the antibody protects people from another infection, or how long that protection will last. Therefore, antibody testing is of little use to researchers who measure which part of the population is infected.
