Research warns that plastic face shields will not work and 100% of Covid-19 droplets will leak

Researchers at the RIKEN Center in Japan conducted simulations using Tomitake, the world’s fastest supercomputer.

Simulations have shown that nearly 100% of air droplets less than 5 micrometers in size pass through a plastic visor and 50% of large droplets are scattered in the air.

“This is especially true for small droplets smaller than 20 micrometers. At the same time, it works in some way for droplets larger than 50 micrometers.”

Researchers suggest that people who are advised not to wear face masks can wear face shields instead, but only outdoors or in well-ventilated indoor areas.

In the UK, there is currently no specific guidance on whether you can wear a plastic face shield instead of a mask.

However, Scotland allows the use of face shields instead of face masks.

“You can use a face visor, but you need to cover your nose and mouth completely,” the Scottish Government website explains.

Meanwhile, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that it is currently unclear whether face shields can protect you from the coronavirus.

“CDC does not recommend using face shields for normal daily activities or as a replacement for cloth face covers.”
