The increase in the number of new positive test results for COVID-19 has attracted the attention of public health authorities in Niagara County.
But public health director Daniel J. Stapleton said the “blip” when test results tended to be almost negative wasn’t entirely unexpected.
“I see trends,” Stapleton said. “For 12 of the last 15 days, the positive rate was less than 1%.”
Due to the recent rise in positive returns, Niagara County has a rate of 1.7%.
According to infectious disease experts, the infection curve is flattened when the positive rate is less than 1%, and the spread of the virus is significantly suppressed when the positive rate is 1% to 2%.
The numbers provided by the county on Thursday showed 14 new positive cases of COVID-19. This brings the total number of positive cases across the county to 1,737 since the pandemic began. This includes positive cases leading to isolation, recovery, and / or death.
There were 101 COVID-related deaths in the county and 1,578 inhabitants recovered from the disease.
Public health officials said 88,615 people in the county were tested. Currently, there are 58 active cases in the county. Officials said 56 people were isolated at home and two were hospitalized.
Also on Thursday, the Department of Health confirmed that two active cases were associated with the Lockport City School District.
“(Thursday’s numbers) were a bit capricious,” Stapleton said. “But I think it’s realistic to expect an increase (on a positive test) with the reopening of school. We can see that today.”
According to Stapleton, the timing of the rise is about 14 days after the reopening of local schools, during the normal incubation period of the virus.
“Until vaccines are available, and until two-thirds of the population is vaccinated, I continue to say that we expect numbers (of positive tests) to be in this range.”
The county’s total death toll remains low, probably because Stapleton controls the virus in local elderly housing and care facilities.
“We are really blessed with the number of cases in nursing homes,” Stapleton said. “Our mortality rate remains low because our elderly housing with care is unaffected.”
He said that reducing or eliminating visits and regular inspections of both residents and staff allowed for the rapid identification and isolation of people infected with the virus.
