Ministry of Health investigating a cluster of legionellosis in New Jersey that left two dead
At Hamilton Township in Mercer County, officials announced Friday that two people were killed and the other two were ill by a Legionella population.
According to the release from the township, the four residents became ill between August 18-24, but HIPPA did not release any other information about them.
“While the risk to residents remains low, Legionella disease can be a serious illness, especially for the elderly and those with underlying illnesses,” said Christopher Hellwig, health officer at Hamilton Township. He said in the announcement. “If you feel sick and have respiratory illnesses such as fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, muscle aches, or headaches, it is advisable to consult your health care provider. It doesn’t spread from person to person. “
Legionellosis is caused by a bacterium called Legionella. It may contract by inhaling small drops of water containing Legionella. This can result from cooling towers (air conditioning units in large buildings), cooling Mrs., decorative fountains, and plumbing systems. According to the Ministry of Health, legionellosis does not occur in drinking water or home air conditioning units.
People over the age of 50, smokers, or people with certain medical conditions, such as weakened immunity, chronic lung disease, or “other chronic health conditions,” are at increased risk of contracting the disease.
The New Jersey Department of Health and the Hamilton Department of Health are trying to discover the origin of the bacteria that infect Hamilton’s population and are collecting environmental samples from “selected locations,” the release said.
An independent laboratory was also hired to sample water at the location of the town’s Mercerville section, and authorities said they were working to identify other potential locations.
“NJDOH and the Hamilton Township Health Department are working closely together to identify potential sources of Legionella exposure,” said Edward M. Lifshitz, MD, Medical Director, Department of Infectious Diseases, New Jersey. Stated. “Because this is an ongoing study, healthcare providers are strongly encouraged to test patients with community-acquired legionellosis and medically transmitted pneumonia, especially among residents of Hamilton Township. Is important to ensure that patients receive appropriate and timely treatment. “
“Knowing positive cases, and in light of Hamilton’s history of Legionella disease, our Department of Health investigates these cases and provides not only a common link, but also continued potential exposure to the population. I took quick action to look for it. ” “Thanks to the NJDOH and NJDEP staff for coordinating efforts to maintain the health of the population.” “Legionellosis and COVID-19 symptoms can be very similar. It is even more important for people who are of sex and experience these symptoms to contact their healthcare provider immediately. “
New Jersey Health Authority Last year 22 people announced they were infected with legionellosis In addition, five “elderly people” who had other health problems died of the disease.
All 22 cases from March 8th to May 13th, 2019 are related to people who live in or visit Union County.
